Q

How come this old model is so expensive?

Posted on 12/08/2011 at 12:41PM by Anonymous
A

The NM-16AM-V2 is a NM based async modem server.

What makes it special …

1. It can go in ANY network module slot on any 26xx, 28xx, 38xx, 29xx, 39xx.

2. “So what?” you say … An async modem bank allows you to do remote access for application access or network management over an analog telephone line – dial-in or dial-out to those areas where broadband is not available.

3. We take for granted that we don’t need dial-up modems anymore for internet or any network access … what about those places where they don’t have that luxury? Yes, they exist in the USA as well. Parts of the US are very much 3rd world in communications and utilities infrastructure.

4. They don’t make async servers with integrated modems anymore. Remember the AS2511 …

How about I add …

The Cisco NM-8AM-V2 and NM-16AM-V2 network modules provide several new features and benefits.
• 8 or 16 internal V.34/V.42bis/V.44/V.90/V.92 analog modems per network module
• Up to 56-kbps data download and 14.4-kbps fax communication
• V.92 Quick Connect and Modem-on-Hold features
• Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) based tools with centrally-managed modem capabilities used to manage the rest of the network (such as CiscoView and Cisco Works 2000)
• Support for a broad range of dial-in features with Cisco IOS dial access software
• Software upgradable modem firmware to support possible future changes
• Support for all traditional Cisco IOS asynchronous encapsulations and WAN services
• Modem AT command interface
• Managed modem support via Cisco IOS CLI commands and Cisco Modem Management MIB
• Support for online insertion and removal (OIR) on Cisco 3660 and Cisco 3745 routers
• Compatible with approved Dialout Client applications
These features enable a wide variety of dial-in clients to use the applications and facilities of the branch office network.
• Virtual private network (VPN) support—This feature allows for cost-effective connections for a geographically dispersed user base. It can reduce access cost support and allow remote users straightforward access to their office LAN through a local Internet service provider (ISP), while maintaining a high degree of end-to-end security.
• Robust security features—Utilizing TACACS+, Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol/Password Authentication Protocol (CHAP/PAP), Triple Data Encryption Standard (3-DES) encryption, and the built-in firewall capabilities of Cisco IOS software allows secure access for a wide variety of remote users to sensitive company data.
And note … dial-in or dial-out … that means you can from a laptop/pc with a modem dial into the async server AND from a laptop/pc connected to a network … IP into the async server on the router then dial out from any of those 16 modems OR take any one more of these modems … group them together to create a FAX server – send or receive faxes in areas where there is no broadband internet access.

A

Some platforms will allow you to run the show power command. If allowed, it will show you the status of the power to the modules.

The NM-16AM-V2 also requires the following commands to function:
enable
configure terminal
modem country smart_acf usa
end

Thanks for you’r answer, but i have read to enable this module you need that the version of the IOS is as minimal 12.3 and only works in the series 2600MX, how can I do if my router is 2610. On the other hand, when I go to the Cisco site to download the IOS upgrade, there are several files of the same version, which one should I download in order to enable the module.

Q

how to configure nm-16am module in 3800 cisco router

A

After inserting the NM-16AM-V2 module you will need to perform the following commands:
enable
configure terminal
modem country smart_acf
end

Instead of use a country name. “usa” for USA, “italy” for Italy etc. This will specify in which country the router and let the router know what signaling to use.

Hope it answers your question. If not, please be more specific what are you trying to configure.
